Orange Coast College (OCC) is seeking a full-time, equity-minded, tenure track faculty member in Respiratory Care commencing with the 2018 fall semester. The primary teaching assignment involves all areas of Respiratory Care - Clinical Education. The Director of Clinical Education (DCE) must be responsible for all aspects of the clinical experiences of students enrolled in the program, including organization, administrations, continuous review and revision, planning for and development of locations (with appropriate supervision) for evolving practice skills, and the general effectiveness of the clinical experience. This assignment also includes curriculum and program development, participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines and the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development.
The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online, hybrid, or off campus and is subject to change as needed. Student centered activities that support OCC's mission include campus wide student success projects funded by the Office of Student Equity; partnerships with local Hispanic Serving four year institutions; active programs that work to improve the academic achievement of racially minoritized students, such as PUENTE and UMOJA; Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) and Disabled Student Program and Services (DSPS).
The Respiratory Care Program at Orange Coast College is a two-year Associate of Science Degree program beginning in the fall semester of each year. The student must complete General Education requirements and program prerequisites prior to entering the program. Courses within the program include lectures, skill application of procedures and techniques in a laboratory setting on campus, and approximately 1000 hours of clinical practice within area hospitals performing the latest procedures in respiratory care. There is also a physician lecture series during the course of the program allowing students to discuss current topics and individual clinical problems in pulmonary medicine with physicians. This coursework leads to an Associate of Science Degree in Respiratory Care.
The Respiratory Care program at Orange Coast College is a fully accredited entry-level practitioner program, accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).
Program graduates are eligible candidates for the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) and Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). Licensure in the state of California as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) requires the RRT credential and satisfying all other requirements for licensure set forth by the Respiratory Care Board of California. The employment outlook for Respiratory Care Practitioners/ Respiratory Therapists is good throughout the United States.
Examples of Duties: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Function as an instructor and program clinical coordinator for the Respiratory Care program; teach assigned classes in theory, classroom laboratory, and clinical instruction.
2. Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member including, but not limited to the following; teach scheduled classes; follow department course outlines; keep accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; perform student clinical evaluations, post and maintain scheduled office hours; participate in department and division meetings and college and/or district wide activities and committees as assigned.
3. Function as Respiratory Care Program Director of Clinical Education.
4. Ensure and maintain compliance of clinical program following CoARC standards. Includes communication and preparation of reports with appropriate agencies as well as the district and college administration.
5. Maintain program course Student Learning Outcomes and assessment process, assist in program review process.
6. Assure clinical inter-rater reliability standards.
7. Responsible for organization, administration, continuous review, planning, development, and general effectiveness of clinical experiences to include clinical evaluations, physician contact, student assignment, and clinical records.
8. Maintain ongoing communication and site visitation with all active clinical sites.
9. Responsible for curriculum according to national standards, state and local regulations - course development, updates, planning, revising, implementation, and evaluation.
10. Maintain current knowledge of the professional discipline and educational methodologies through continuing professional development.
11. Assignment may include recommendation of clinical affiliations and the assurance of instructional quality of clinical education by regular visits to clinical education centers.
12. Coordinate the scheduling of classes, including the recommendation of part-time assignments to department IUA/Chair and Division Dean.
13. Communicate with state and national professional associations.
14. Work cooperatively toward mutual goals with other program coordinators and with the School of Allied Health Professions Faculty.
15. Recommend the purchase of equipment and supplies and coordinate repair of lab equipment to assure program quality.
16. Develop instructional innovations to ensure program success.
17. Assist with program outreach, including publicity, community relations, advisory committee membership and meetings, external funding opportunities, and campus events.
Qualifications and Physical Demands
1. Must have earned at least a baccalaureate degree from an academic institution accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE). The baccalaureate degree can be in any field of study.
2. Possess a valid Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Credential.
3. Hold a current, active State of California Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license.
4. Have a minimum of four (4) years' experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist with at least two (2) years in clinical respiratory care.
5. Have a minimum of two (2) years' experience teaching in an accredited respiratory care program either as an appointed faculty member or as a clinical preceptor.
6. Graduate of a CoARC accredited advanced practitioner respiratory care program.
7. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

• Active member of the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) and California Society for Respiratory Care (CSRC)
Demonstrate a commitment to:
• Collaborate with fellow faculty members in program- and course-level curriculum development.
• Instruct and assist in growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.
• Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and the field of Respiratory Care shape patterns of participation and outcomes.
• Willingness to examine and re-mediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students.
• Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in the classroom.
• Experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in Respiratory Care, particularly as it relates to the relevance of Respiratory Care to students' lives, interests, and communities.
• Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within Respiratory Care courses and classrooms.
• Evidence of an ability to self-reflect and respond to an evidenced-based assessment of student learning.
• Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Coast Community College District.
• Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.
• Ability to work with computers, and use the Internet and interactive technologies to engage students in on-campus and online courses (where academically appropriate).
• Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Conditions of Employment
For a full-time, two-semester position a maximum starting range of $50,519 to $86,130 is offered, based on the 2017-18 salary schedule of $50,519 to $120,442. In addition, an annual stipend of $2,946 is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.
Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.
